Sam Gatt

owner/ head coach

Sam has been a Personal Trainer since 2011, and found CrossFit in 2012. “I had become bored with the typical gym routine…I wanted to return to my athletic roots, to train for a sport and still lift heavy weights. CrossFit was the ideal match” he says.

After taking the CrossFit Level 1 course in 2013, Sam began coaching others at a new affiliate and immediately saw the benefits CrossFit training could bring. “I knew I’d found something special, something that could do good things for a lot of people” he says.

Sam’s passion is in helping others improve their quality of life through dedication to moving well, eating the right foods, and building relationships. “I love to see people get better, both in and out of the gym” he says, “that’s what motivates me to give my best each day.”

On coaching at Outwork Sam says “I love that I get to work with so many different types of people at all stages in their fitness journey…I feel very fortunate to be in a position to help them make positive changes to their lives on a daily basis, it really is the best job!”

Before CrossFit Sam enjoyed many active pursuits, particularly Skateboarding, Freerunning and Mountain Biking. He also spent a number of years training as a Bodybuilder, entering a competition in 2012.

Helen’s passion is creating better health and fitness for people of all ages. At Outwork she looks after the CrossFit Kids and Teens programmes, encouraging children to enjoy being active and to keep it up through to adulthood. She also takes care of the gym’s one to one Nutrition coaching programme, helping individuals improve their health through nutrition and fitness to create a healthier, happier world.

On coaching at Outwork Helen says, “The adults are all so willing to learn and improve it makes coaching a dream. Celebrating their successes and finding ways to help them to continually improve their health and wellbeing is very rewarding. The kids and teens are a lot of fun, too. I love seeing them enjoy movement and using their new skills outside the gym.”

Before CrossFit Helen spent a good few years riding horses and had tried pretty much every sporting hobby and fitness class going. She says “CrossFit is the one that really stuck with me”.

Phil Hope

Coach

Phil began CrossFit training in 2012, while working alongside head coach Sam as a personal trainer. He recalls, “Sam used to disappear for a couple of hours and walk back in pouring with sweat. After a few months I became interested to learn what had him working so hard, so when a box opened up locally I decided to give it a go.” Since then, Phil has earned a number of certifications, and dedicated his life to helping others through his coaching.

Phil specialises in body weight and calisthenics training, and runs the Gymnastics programme at Outwork. His passion lies in helping others to live more positive and fulfilling lives through the CrossFit training methodology. “Getting my members to take what they learn in the gym and use it to improve their lives outside of the gym, is a real priority for me as a coach” he says. Phil takes pride in having the opporunity to work with clients of all ages, from the youngest in his CrossFit Kids classes, through to his oldest client at 82 years young!

On coaching at Outwork Phil says “I’m fascinated by peoples individual stories. I love interacting with such a variety of people on a daily basis, and really getting to know their ‘why’. Having that understanding truly allows me to help people achieve their goals, and I’m able to learn from them too. That’s what I love about coaching.”

Before CrossFit Phil played football, pratised Taekwondo and was a keen World of Warcraft fan. His other passions include hiking, rock climbing/bouldering and photo/videography.

Fergus McKinnon

In 2015 Fergus was looking to make a lifestyle change, and had been told about CrossFit by his brother. “I thought it sounded challenging, but cool at the same time” he says. Turning up at the local box Fergus met Outwork Co-Owner and head coach Sam, and decided to give it a go. “After that, everything changed” he says, “it was a fantastic and positive time in my life!”.

Ferg has been coaching others since 2018, and has a keen interest in nutrition, motivation and psychology. His passion lies in helping others increase their confidence and self-esteem through fitness. “I get a real buzz from helping people, and being on that journey with them” he says.

On coaching at Outwork Ferg says “CrossFit literally changed my life for the better and put me on a completely new track…perhaps it even saved my life! So if I can help just one person in my coaching career by sharing what I have learnt then it will all be worth it.”

Before CrossFit Ferg was stuck in the typical gym routine, and struggled to find his confidence in that environment. After reading a well known quote from Socrates around the same time he began CrossFit, he had a paradigm shift in his thinking, and realised anything is possible.

Outside of the gym Ferg enjoys spending time with his wife and their young family, and can be found indulging in the occasional Macaroni Cheese.
